Abstract/Summary

A systems study was conducted on Udenna Environmental Services Inc.'s thermal treatment operations wherein the main problem of the system was unmet demand of 1,234,889.71 L of wastes resulting an opportunity loss pf P22,228,014.78 for the year 2014. By using Ishikawa diagram and the Pareto principle, the major causes that contributed to the opportunity loss were machine breakdown due to primary chamber insulation deterioration, machine breakdown due to industrial combustion burner clogging, machine breakdown due to residual port clogging, machine breakdown due to quench duct deterioration and machine breakdown due to quench chamber wall clogging.

To reduce the frequency of primary chamber insulation's deterioration, a policy was developed to control the wastes fed into the thermal oxidizer machine by its type. Also the solution for this problem also suggested that the primary chamber should be rotated so that the deterioration of the insulation surface occurs slowly and equally on different areas. This solution was chosen over other alternatives as it does not require investing capital resources into purchasing new materials or equipment rather it has the capacity to lengthen the life of the insulation without incurring additional costs. To address clogging along the IC burner, modified gun burner and fuel diffuser were chosen to replace the current burner system to decrease the probability of dripping of the bunker fuel causing blockages. This solution incurs cost as it requires encasing, repiping and reinstallation of the burner. Residual port clogging was solved by installation of a new design of the residual port wherein its dimensions were increased to be able to contain more residue ashes. Also a cart was used to easily transfer and dispose ashes from the port. Lastly, the quench duct is to be reinstalled with a sturdier surface material (titanium G12 alloy) that withstands corrosion and extreme temperature over steel. Also, the solution indicated that as the quench nozzles be purchases and reinstalled horizontally to redirect the pressurized water to remove build-up of ashes. To ensure that machine breakdown does not re-occur frequently as it did during 2014, a preventive maintenance system was developed wherein periodical planned downtime was scheduled to avoid the need for corrective breakdown.

The proposed system incurs an investment cost of P5,998,757.00. The generated solution yielded an estimate of P22,228,014.78 annual savings. The payback period of the proposed systems is 0.2699 years or within 99 days of operation.
