Abstract/Summary

Executive Summary A. Market Study The unending activities in the markets account for the unending disposal of garbage produced therefrom. For as long as there is human activity, there is always the presence of waste. A problem arises when these wastes are not dealt with properly. Despite the claims by some market administrators of having garbage disposal system, observations of the system's results make them agree for the need to install and strictly implement a system that is more responsive to the problem. Thus, a garbage center was conceptualized. Though most of the markets have their respective dumpsites, the service that a garbage center will provide will be more effective, productive, and far more different. The center may be rendering services to the different markets in Metro Manila. Since there are approximately 169 markets in the Metropolis, the demand for such service would be very feasible. More so, since garbage are already sorted from the moment of collection, recyclables won't really go into waste. The center is intended to serve the increasing demand of the recycling market who would turn market wastes, such as chicken feathers, shrimp heads, and coconut husks into feather dusters, fish sauce (locally known as patis), and coir respectively. At the same time, the said center will enable vendors and market owners to earn from their garbage B. Technical Feasibility The primary objective which the service of the garbage center will be rendering is to alleviate the problem of waste disposal in A. Bonifacio market, and probably the other markets

in Manila, whether public or private. The center will be installed within the area of the market. This will be structured in a way that will accommodate storage of the garbage and would prevent it from getting scattered and far from reach of scavengers. The system of collection would require carts with plastic bags, specially designed that would facilitate sorting. Saleable would be separated on one container from non-saleable on the other container. The collection will be by section of the stalls. When the garbage is full, the plastic bags will be lifted out from the cart, tied up and placed in the center. Non-saleable will be collected by the garbage truck and will be brought to the designated dumping site. On the other hand, saleable will be sold to those who intend to turn these wastes into productive and saleable products. The initial capital of this project would, of course, require a big amount. But this will be recovered as it operates in the form of intangible benefits such as cleanliness and sanitation of the place and profit from sale of recyclables C. Socio-Economic Study The project to be undertaken shall be of great benefit not only to the market itself but also to the environment, the economy, and the general public as well. The floods caused by irresponsible throwing of non-biodegradable materials, the traffic congestion due to mountainous garbage that has piled up the streets, the discomfort caused by the foul smell, and health-problems due to illness-causing bacteria are among the many problems that the project shall alleviate.
