Abstract/Summary
SMARTBASE is a pseudo database management system (DBMS) that uses natural language in processing relational databases. It has the essential parts of a DBMS, namely, a Data Definition Language (DDL), a Data Manipulation Language (DML), a database manager, and a query language processor. Clipper is used as the file manager. SMARTBASE allows the user to query and delete the database using the English language. It also provides facilities for inserting values in the database, for modifying old values in the database, and for creating new databases. The interface of SMARTBASE is divided into two (2) modes, namely, the menu mode and the NLP mode. For the insertion, modification, and creation of databases, the menu mode is used. For query and deletion, the NLP mode is used. The thesis proponents believe that the contribution of SMARTBASE is not only in the implementation of NLP in querying the database, but more importantly, in the implementation of relational database concepts in the system. Enhancement of the system is recommended to allow more complex queries. Also, the proponents recommend the study of new and faster ways of retrieving and storing of values in the database.
