Abstract/Summary

This study was done in order to clarify the concept of privacy among rural people of Bagong Silang, Calatagan, Batangas. Based on past literature, the researchers found out that there have been only minimal studies which focused on the privacy of Asians and these focused on an urban setting. The researchers also found out that there are two dimensions of privacy namely physical and psychosocial. The study aimed to know the following based on these two dimensions: 1) Where are the rural folks more comfortable, in open spaces or in enclosed spaces? 2) What do rural folks prefer, to be near or to be far from their neighbors? 3) Where are rural folks more comfortable: a. In a fully enclosed room or in an open room with a lot of open doors and windows? b. Being alone in the room or sharing the room with someone else? 4) Can rural folks express their a. thoughts. b. feelings? 5) If yes, what are these thoughts and feelings? 6) To whom do rural folks express these thoughts and feelings to? 6) To what extent do rural folks express their thoughts and feelings? 7) The study is exploratory and the indigenous methods of pagmamasid and pagtatanong-tanong were used. Pakikipagkuwentuhan was used to establish rapport among the participants and not as a method for gathering data. A guide questionnaire was used to facilitate the pagtatanong-tanong. Stratified random sampling was used to choose the participants (N=30). The participants were interviewed and the results obtained were analyzed using content-analysis. Results show that majority of the rural folks exhibit privacy in the psychosocial dimension by selective disclosure. Privacy in the physical dimension was exhibited in a very small degree.
