Abstract/Summary

Telenovela is the Spanish and Portuguese word for soap opera. Spanish language soap operas, or telenovelas, are produced in all Spanish speaking countries, the United States, and now in the Philippines. In our country, most of the telenovelas shown are produced in Mexico, hence the inscrutability of the factors behind the Filipino affiliation for the Mexican telenovela. This study will remind us of the Filipinos’ shared history with Mexico under Spain. The researchers looked at the parallelisms between Filipino and Mexican cultures as reflected through the Mexican telenovela. Using the historical-particularist theory, the researchers utilized the similar experiences of the Filipinos and Mexicans under the Spanish regime, to explain why the two countries share many of the same values. The amount of the influence of Spanish culture for both countries was very strong, and the effects of the same suffering which both countries endured under Spanish rule are very comparable. Both were inspiring stories of suffering, faith, and the eventual prevailing of the rightful conquered. The same emotions are made felt for th audiences who watch Mexican telenovelas as they follow the life and martyrdom of the characters. A content analysis of the Mexican telenovela Gata Salvaje was done in order to glean these shared values and traditions as reflected in the said telenovela.
