Abstract/Summary

This study aims to identify and determine the characteristics of buildings damaged by past earthquakes, assess the buildings using methods based on the Architecture Institute of Japan’s (AIJ) Level 1 screening and Applied Technology Council’s (ATC) Rapid Screening Procedure (RSP), and to relate the damage to the index or score of the subject buildings. It involved the acquisition of the structural specifications and characteristics of damaged Reinforced Concrete buildings in the 1990 Luzon Earthquake particularly in Baguio City based on a post-earthquake damage investigation performed by the AIJ and PHIVOLCS. The seismic performance of the structures where then computed based on the capacity of its vertical members to resist lateral forces. These were then compared to various building properties and characteristics. For AIJ, the study showed that the building weight to columnar area ratio, W/Ac, is directly proportional to the damage and is inversely proportional to the index. The floor area to columnar area ratio, Aflr/Ac also shows a similar relationship to the index. For ATC, the results showed that there is definite relationship established that it rely mostly on visual observations and assumptions. One similarity that was observed was that buildings ranging from level 4 – 5 damage have vertical irregularity.
