Abstract/Summary

The purpose of this study is to find out the intergenerational relationship between grandmothers and adolescent grandchildren. This study aims to classify and define the similarities and differences of the perceived roles and experiences of both grandmothers and grandchildren, taking into consideration of the following variables that may affect the relationship: gender of teenage grandchildren (male or female), the area of residence (rural or urban), and living conditions (whether they are living with the parents or not). This study employed a descriptive research design to generate data. The sample consists of thirty pairs of grandmothers and teenage grandchildren who are staying together. Fifteen pairs in Greater Manila Area were included as respondents while the other pairs were taken from areas outside Metro Manila. There were also an equal number of male and female grandchildren represented in this study. The said respondents were interviewed in acquiring the needed information. In analyzing the data, the interviews were content analyzed. The responses were categorized and this serve to characterize the relationship between grandmothers and grandchildren. The findings indicated that grandchildren living in the rural areas have a closer relationship with their grandmothers than those living in the urban areas. Moreover, it was revealed that grandmothers and grandchildren spend more time together and have a more pleasant relationship, if the children's parents are not living in the same roof with the grandmother and grandchild. However, it was obtained that gender of teenage grandchildren does not have any difference regarding their experiences with, as well as their perceived roles towards their grandmothers. Given the results of the study, it is recommended to consider other variables such as socio-economic status, age of the grandmothers and the grandchildren. Interview with the parents of the grandchildren is also suggested to find out any discrepancies and parallelisms in responses.
