Abstract/Summary

The study explored the factors that influence succession preference and the mission and group orientation dimensions of organizational culture in selected Filipino-Chinese family business. Data was collected from individual interviews with seventeen family members from eight family firms. Interview data was subjected to thematic analysis from which themes, and later, suggestions for the achievement of goals, were determined. The study found unique themes for each succession preference, which were also consistently related to the factor under study. Family firms with an internal succession preference were found to value managerial skills in a successor, a profit-oriented mission, and group performance in terms of organizational culture and reinforcement of strict operations. On the other hand, family firms with a preference for external succession were found to value leadership skills, were expansion-oriented in terms of mission, valued capability development, and sought to strengthen their vision. The study contributes to literature on Filipino-Chinese family businesses in the context of organizational culture, which may be useful for strategic planning.
