Abstract/Summary

Brgy. 717 Council is composed of the barangay officials of Brgy. 717. The barangay is under the fifth district of the city of Manila and it is located along Leveriza St., Malate, Manila. There are around 400-500 residents living in Brgy. 717, having about 80 families on the average.

The organizational communication need of the barangay was that they need to have a better comprehension of certain law clauses of R.A 9262 (Anti-Violence Against Women and their children Act of 2004) to make them able to act on any future violence cases and to teach the children about proper values. It was revealed in the communication needs assessment that although they have heard the law before. they still need to be enlightened on certain law clauses. In addition, the parents also reported that most children become disrespectful to the elderly.

To address their needs, an event entitled A Family Day for Brgy. 717 Manila was held last September 26, 2015 in Makabata Guesthouse and Cafe. This event was composed of two participatory talks and four participatory games which aimed at raising the comprehension of the participants about the law and to teach the children about proper values.

At the end of the event, the evaluation revealed that the participants now have a clearer understanding of the law and that they are now more inspired to help the victims of abuse. In addition, the parents also reported that the children are now inclined to follow the proper values based on the stories shared by their children. Therefore, the event was a success because it was able to meet its goals to address the organizational communication need.
