Abstract/Summary
The Internet Controlled Portable Image Acquisition (ICPIA) System is an application of embedded systems and networked appliances. It is the product of intelligent semiconductors known as microcontrollers that perform as a CPU for the entire system. More specifically, the system is a surveillance device that is capable of capturing and relaying screenshots acquired from an area which is served as web pages to browsers with internet access. The microcontrollers mentioned are used in different implementations. One is used as the system's CPU it drives an MMC that is used to store the images, and also the camera that captures these images. Another is used solely for running the web server it contains codes and routines that make the entire system network-able. To explore the capabilities of such as system, tests were made to measure performance and capacity. These tests involve determining the quality and resolution of the output image, as well as its capacity of servicing a number of clients. Results show that a maximum of three clients and three images can be supported by the system and that the delays that happen in processing and relaying images also cause a bottleneck in the web server. The time interval caused by the bottleneck is 10 seconds average. The optimal resolution of the images is 320x240. To reduce code complexity, HTTP commands were limited to GET commands, while ICMP functions were limited to ping requests for connectivity check. This signifies the limitations of the hardware used, and that it can be improved by associating faster and more powerful hardware components.
