Abstract/Summary

The research is an endeavor involving two technologies : computer-based learning (CBL) and natural language processing (NLP). It deals with concepts in intelligent computer-aided instruction, second language acquisition, and computational linguistics. Issues regarding the development of an intelligent computer-aided language learning (ICALL) tool are studied and analyzed focusing primarily on semantic analysis techniques. The end result of this study is SELF, a system for foreign language learning. This system is capable of analysis and correction of syntactic and semantic errors in constrained English sentences through algorithms designed. Thus, this endeavor has produced a tool for improving one's comprehension and proficiency in the English language. Likewise, it is a modest contribution to the current research on computer-aided foreign language acquisition and natural language processing.
