Abstract/Summary

As a requirement for completing the degree of B.S. Computer Science, the researchers came up with a thesis project that finds use for computers in education along the line of an Intelligent Computer-Assisted Instruction (ICAI) system for Algebra. The software product would exhibit a certain degree of intelligence to enhance the conventional teaching methodology, wherein it would help alleviate the difficulty of the teachers in providing individualized instruction to cope with the different learning capabilities of students. Public secondary students are primarily the intended or targeted users although there is no intention whatsoever to prevent others who want to use it for any other purpose. Developed using the microcomputer, the goal of this project initiated by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is to provide a supplementary aid to the usual classroom method of learning but not as a sole source of instruction. ICAI-Algebra is also useful for purposes of review. The researchers also conducted numerous surveys to gather much-needed information from the acknowledged experts in the field of Algebra -- the public high school teachers around the City of Manila Since ICAI development in the Philippines is at its infancy stage, ICAI-Algebra it can be considered as a springboard for future intelligent software projects dealing on the subject Algebra or any other related topic.
