Abstract/Summary

Learn Spanish is an artificial-based computer-assisted instruction (A1-based CAI) on the Spanish language. It features a tutorial, drills, and a vocabulary. The tutorial presents the lessons and gives short exercises. The drills, on the other hand, provides more exercises for student practice. Most of these exercises are computer generated. To make this possible, a knowledge base was created for the generation of Spanish sentences. This knowledge base consists of the grammar of the Spanish language. Aside from this, rules were incorporated in the system in forming its own answer for the exercise items it generates. A vocabulary facility is also made available within the tutorial and drills part. This utility gives the English meaning of the Spanish word searched for. It also features a speaking capability that provides the pronunciation of the word specified. There is another component which is similar to the vocabulary facility. This component presents Spanish words and their English equivalence like a tutorial. The words are grouped in different categories. The pronunciation of the words are also provided.
