Abstract/Summary
The study explores the influences of separated parents and single-parenthood on their adolescent child's family life, social experiences and romantic relationship. 10 Filipino adolescents were asked to participate in an in-depth interview with questions that are related with the 3 different relationships. For the group who belonged to a separated family home, 6 themes were formulated life (Role Playing, Emotional Outlet, Problematic, Parental Interaction, Sibling Interaction and Personal Growth). For the social factor, 4 themes were formulated (Feeling, Coping, Belief and Personal Growth). Finally, for the romantic life factor, 3 themes were formed (Belief, Principles, and Romantic Problems). For the group who belonged to a single-parenthood family, there were 5 themes made for the family life, (Role Playing, Emotional Outlet, Parental Interaction, Sibling Interaction and Personal Growth). The social factor also has 4 themes, (Feelings, Coping, Belief and Personal Growth). For the romantic life, 3 themes were formed, (Belief, Principles, and Romantic Problems). The study concludes that there are different implications of single-parent family structure in the perception on the relationships of an adolescent and there is also a difference between adolescents coming from a single parent family and a separated family. The main difference is that adolescents coming from separated parents experience negative thoughts, feelings and behaviors and adolescents coming from single-parenthood families are more positive about their family situation.
