Antibiograms and prevalence of extended-spectrum B-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli in pigs given antibiotic-enriched feeds

Abstract/Summary

Resistance of bacteria to antimicrobial agents is increasing worldwide. The objective of the study was to determine the susceptibility of Escherichia coli isolates to antimicrobials that are usually used in pig feeds and for treatment of diseases in man, and to determine the prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli. Rectal swabs were taken from 247 pigs in 17 different farms in the Cavite and Rizal provinces in the Philippines. Multiple resistance phenotypes were expressed by 181 of the 185 E. coli isolates. The most common resistance exhibited was to tetracycline (95.67%) followed by resistance to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (75.14%). The isolates also showed resistance to ampicillin (62.16%), chloramphenicol (47.57%) amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (21.08%), gentamicin (16.75%). The resistance to aztreonam, amikacin and cefazolin was shown by < 3.00% of the isolates. The resistance phenotype that occurred most frequently was multiple resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline and trimetoprim-sulfamethoxazole shown by 16.22% of the isolates. None of the E. coli were confirmed to be ESBL producers.
