Abstract/Summary

Extract from the fruit, leaves and stems of Momordica charantia was tested for the presence of anti-bacterial activities against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Proteus sp., Salmonella sp., Shigella sp. and Staphylococcus aureus using the Modified Disk Agar Plate Method. Three concentrations of the extract were prepared using 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 ratios. Water was used as the control. In the 1:1 concentration, the organisms Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Shigella sp. and Proteus sp. (21.0 mm.) showed the highest zone of inhibition for the fruit. B. subtilis for the leaves (16.5 mm.) and the stems (11.2 mm.). Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella sp. showed no zones of inhibition. In the 1:2 concentration, the organisms E. coli, B. subtilis were inhibited by the fruits and the leaves while Shigella sp. was inhibited only by the fruits. Salmonella sp., Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus sp. were not inhibited. The control used showed no zones of inhibitions against all the test organisms.
