Abstract/Summary

This study presents a qualitative research on the changes in Filipino values across generations in the Philippines and an analysis of the Filipino expression, experience, and beliefs about the Filipino value hiya based on their personal and shared experiences. The study investigates the differences in the interpretation of the meaning and beliefs of the Filipino value hiya of individuals across three generations, namely, the baby boomers (1946-1965) aged 54-73, generation X (1966-1980) aged 39-53, and a combination of generation Y or millennial and Generation Z (1981-2010) aged 18-38. The study compares each generations’ interpretation of the Filipino value of hiya with regards to their workplace/school and social relationships (friendships, family, significant other/s). The study compares the difference in the participants’ beliefs, expressions, and experiences relating to the value of hiya as per their definition of the value per generation. The qualitative study includes 15 Filipinos with 5 individuals per age group/generation and utilizes semi-structured one-on-one interviews to procure information. The results of the study showed differences in the beliefs, expressions, and experiences of the Filipino value of hiya per generation.
