Abstract/Summary

In the first quarter of 2016, there were 539 cases of sexual abuse amongst children. In the Philippines, there are only three residential homes that take in young street girls who have been physically or sexually abused and prostituted. Abuse and moreover child sexual abuse has been a different issue to tackle because it has been seen as a taboo subject. Finding refuge aims to shed light on the issue of child sexual abuse and inform people about shelters that cater specifically to young girls who have gone through this traumatic experience.

Finding Refuge tells the story of a group of girls at a crisis intervention center for young girls who have been sexually abused. The researcher follows their daily life in their new-found home and seeks to learn more about the effects of this kind of abuse as well as how these girls have progressed and healed at the shelter. With this, the researcher intends to project this topic in such a way that shows how through acknowledging this issue more girls who have gone through this may seek help and speak up about it. Furthermore, it also aims to spark a conversation on child sexual abuse as more than just a stigmatized subject, but also a reoccuring matter that has and is affecting children, women, and people all over the country.
