Abstract/Summary
Allelopathy is defined as mechanism of plant-plant interactions mediated by plant- or microorganism-produced chemicals released to the environment. The majorities of allelochemicals are secondary metabolites and among others belong to terpenoids, phenolic compounds, organic cyanides and long chain of fatty acids. The collection of the plant species to be extracted were done in Barangay Manibaug-Pasig, Porac, Pampanga. The plant samples were brought home to be prepared for plant identification, preservation and extraction. The plants were prepared and submitted it to the National Museum in Manila, Philippines in the Botany division for identification. The collected plants were blended accordingly; and the extracts were preserved in a 50C refrigerator or freezer. All the glass wares and other materials needed were placed for at least 30 minutes under a UV light chamber to lessen or prevent bacterial growth. The mixtures were stirred, and then filtered with four layers of cheese cloth to remove unwanted filtrates. Each of the plant extracts were placed in centrifuge tubes and rotated at a speed of 1000 rpm for 30 minutes to remove the debris. Then, the plant extracts were poured in sterilized bottles and placed again in the refrigerator or freezer at 50C temperature. For experiment 1, the following legume seeds were used: Mongo Beans (Phaseolous aureus), Red Beans, Cowpea (Vigna sinensis), Black beans (Phaselous vulgaris). Ten (10) seeds of same species were utilize in five (5) trials, for a total of fifty (50) seeds in each plant extract. For experiment 2, the following crop seeds were used: Corn (Zea mays), cucumber (Cucumis sativus) , watermelon (Citrillus lanatos), pechay (Brassica napus). Ten (10) seeds of same species were utilized in two (2) trials. A total of twenty seeds are immersed in each extract. There are 5 weed extracts plus the control. Seeds were placed in microwaveable plastic containers and immersed in 10 to 20 mL of plant extracts. These were placed in an illuminated chamber at 24oC for 21-days according to the methodology designed by Chung (2000). After each week measurements were made from the stem or leaf down to the root growth progress in length were measured and recorded. Also, the number of seeds that germinated were counted and recorded. Chi-square test, One-way Analysis of Variance and the Tukey’s Test were utilize to calculate the statistical analysis. The researcher concludes that Bulbostylis barbata and Pueraria phaseoloides had greatly significantly inhibited the growth of the leguminous and crop seeds from the two experiments done. Based on the results, these two species had greatly affected the germination of the seeds and the growth in length in comparison to the control group.
