Abstract/Summary

Forty-eight specimens of corals from family Fungiidae were collected for this study. The corals were identified to the species level, and 27 species were found. The collection was done in six sites in Talim Bay, Lian, Batangas, during the month of May 2010. Identification of the specimens was done in Br. Alfred Shields FSC Marine Station of De La Salle University, which is also in Lian, Batangas. Veron’s “Corals of the World” (2000) was the main reference used for identification. However, “Taxonomy, Phylogeny and Biogeography of Mushroom Corals (Scleractinia: Fungiidae)” by Dr. Hoeksema (1989) was also consulted. Only morphological characteristics were used for the identification. Physical characteristics examined for identification in the laboratory were shape, number and position of mouths, septae and septal teeth, costae and costal ridges, and the presence of pits in the undersurface. Some field characteristics like the color and presence of tentacles were also observed. Photographs of specimens from both the field and laboratory were then compiled to make an electronic field guide for the species collected. The field guide targets a variety of audiences, and seeks to familiarize people with the corals that can be found in an area in our country. It points out distinguishing characteristics of every species, and shows differences between species that could be similar to each other.
