Abstract/Summary

The researchers have decided to conduct a study on the sustainability of D. M. Consunji Incorporated (DMCI) vis-à-vis the AITG (Adaptation, Innovation, Transfer and Growth) model and through DMCI’s financial statements. They studied DMCI and not DMCI Holdings, Inc. for the mere fact that DMCI has been operating since 1954 while DMCI Holdings started last 1995. DMCI also started it all. It was the one which made it possible for roots to grow. DMCI is engaged in construction services and has a goal to be a committed institution by delivering excellent construction projects and services.

The definition of a sustainable business will only be limited to 2one that lasts for a long period of time, achieving its purpose. This measures how sustainability in business does not constitute continuous profit earned,3 (Velasco, 2007). Sustainability of DMCI will also be based on the AITG model and their 11 years financial statement from 1997 to 2007. The total assets did have its ups and downs but their net income and annual revenue little by little decreased from 1997 to 2002 due to the Asian financial crisis. In 2003 to 2007, even though they were still having volatility, they were resilient enough to increase the annual revenue and net income once more.

The research instrument used as a survey questionnaire due to the short time allotted for the study and the hectic schedules of the people involved. 20 managers of DMCI were asked to answer a survey that contained the employees profile and questions regarding the four factors of sustainability which are Adaptability, Innovation, Transfer and Growth.

DMCI’s excellence towards achieving its mission to work towards greater professionalism, build structures, which are innovative, and at the same time helps develop the economic and social development of the country. They have this unique strategy and applied innovative techniques that enabled them to survive the changes in the environment and produce environmental friendly structures. DMCI has succeeded in grasping new market opportunities as seen through their expansion by having DMCI Holdings, Inc. as their mother company. They give back what they receive through different forms of Christy works, donations and have developed the skills of their leaders through different training approaches. This brings DMCI into fulfilling all of the sustainability indicators based on the AITG sustainable business model.
