Abstract/Summary

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have been utilized by businesses to enhance their operations and more importantly, enable them to transcend geographic boundaries in order to reach a wider market and remain competitive. The use of ICT to carry out buying and selling transactions is what we have come to know now as e-commerce. This has been deemed an indispensable business tool by many companies to address the challenge brought about by globalization – to bring markets closer together. The use of e-commerce as a means of transacting with direct consumers is primarily an outgrowth of the increasing popularity of the internet and other communication devices. However, due the fact that internet and infrastructure penetration in most developing countries is still low, business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce has not yet been widely accepted in those regions. With this, the proponents have explored the possibility of developing a model which encapsulates key factors vital in ensuring the success of a B2C e-commerce venture. By integrating existing models of e-commerce, the proponents have identified propensity and awareness of the market, quality of the e-commerce system and trustworthiness of the business as the essential components of the developed model. Likewise, a business and legal environment that supports e-commerce is also deemed important. To test the relevance of the model, the proponents have conducted an in-depth case analysis on Philippine Airlines (PAL), a company which has pioneered B2C e-commerce in the country’s airline industry, with its introduction of e-ticketing. The results of the case analysis reveal that the model has indeed captured the necessary elements of a successful B2C e-commerce operation. PAL’s successful e-ticketing business has been largely a result of capitalizing on technology, established reputation of the company and providing various ICT channels to reach their target market. With e-ticketing, PAL has reaped the benefits of reduced costs and increased efficiency.
