Abstract/Summary

The thesis is an exposition of a paper written by Housila P. Singh and Mariano Ruiz Espejo that was entitled “On linear regression and ratioproduct estimation of a finite population mean”. The ratio estimator is an efficient one if the association between y and x is direct. The product estimator is efficient if the association between y and x is indirect. In this paper, we show proof that the ratio-product estimator is more efficient than the ratio estimator or the product estimator whether the association of y and x is direct or indirect. We illustrated that the MSE obtained by the ratio-product estimator is always lower than the MSE of both the ratio estimator and the product estimator. Using the 2000 Family Income and Expenditures Survey dataset, we have shown that the MSE of the ratio product estimator is always lower than the usual ratio estimator and product estimator. With this, we could say that the ratio-product estimator is the better estimator for the mean of a finite population.
