Abstract/Summary

This study presented an analysis of the demographic factors and the external influences to healthy eating among young professionals in Metro Manila. The study also evaluated the propensity of these individuals to eat healthy and its relationship with the factors and influences aforementioned. The proponents assessed a correlation type of study which made use of surveys distributed among 100 individuals who fit the study’s specifications (18-25 years old, young professionals, at least a high school graduate) and conducted interviews among 5 individuals to further support the study. A Chi-Square test of independence was used in determining the relationship between the propensity of young professionals to eat healthy and income as well as education; and the Pearson test of correlation was used to evaluate the connection between their propensity to eat healthy and media and peer pressure. The results showed three factors that define the profile of these young professionals who eat healthy: education, peer pressure and media. Through education, young professionals are able to make wiser choices as they know the consequences of not eating healthy eventually motivating them to pursue this kind of lifestyle. Peer pressure and media are factors to the propensity of young professionals to eat healthy but only at a minimal level. Income was not a significant factor to the young professional’s propensity to eat healthy as this does not hinder young professionals to eat the healthy food choices they make, whether it is affordable or beyond their budget as this has become a habit and a change in this would have to mean a change in their lifestyle as well.
