Abstract/Summary
Halimeda tuna, Padina minor, Enteromorpha intestinalis, Amphiroa fragilissima, and Hypnea cervicornis are marine algae that may be found on the shore of Matuod Beach near the De La Salle Bro. Alfred Shields FSC Marine Station in Lian, Batangas. The methanol and ethanol extracts of these algae were tested for the presence of antimicrobial activity against drug susceptible Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, MRSA, extended spectrum B-lactamase (ESBL) positive Klebsiella pneumoniae, extended spectrum B-lactamase (ESBL) positive Escherichia coli, metallob- lactamase (MBL) producing Acinetobacter baumannii and metallo-b-lactamase (MBL) producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa using the disk diffusion assay. Results showed the absence of antimicrobial activity of all algal extracts tested on any of the bacterial isolates. On the other hand, ethanol extracts from Sargassum polycystum, Sargassum sp., Sargassum oligocystum and Sargassum siliquosum collected from the same site were tested for their cytotoxicity against the normal human fetal fibroblast cell line HDFn, human breast cancer cell line MCF-7, human colon cancer cell line HT-29, and human monocytic leukemia cell line THP-1 using the Presto Blue® resazurin assay. The results showed that based on the standards set by the American National Cancer Institute, except for the ethanol extract from S. polycystum against the MCF-7 cell line, all other ethanol extracts from S. polycystum, Sargassum sp., S. oligocystum and S. siliquosum were cytotoxic to all cancer cell lines with IC50 values of < 30 μg/mL. Among these, the ethanol extract of S. polycystum was highly cytotoxic to MCF-7; Sargassum sp. to MCF-7, HT-29 and THP-1; S. oligocystum to HT-29 and S. siliquosum to MCF-7 and HT-29 with IC50 of < 20 μg/mL. In addition, all of the ethanolic extracts from S. polycystum, Sargassum sp., S. oligocystum and S. siliquosum, were found to be non-cytotoxic to the normal human fibroblast cell line. Results show the potential of the ethanolic extracts from the algae tested for use in the management of cancer.
