Abstract/Summary

The success of Grameen banking of Bangladesh in poverty alleviation has inspired other countries, the Philippines included, to follow in its footsteps. However these microfinance institutions in the country, being mere replications from a different country with different conditions, have issues regarding effectivity and sustainability. This paper assessed 3 microfinace institutions all in existence in Towerville, San Jose Bulacan, studying mechanisms and practices implemented in their operations and assessing their impact on borrowers to study their effectiveness at poverty alleviation. In addition, using internationally accepted microfinance benchmarks and the DSMP framework, the institutions are assessed to look at sustainability and profitability.
