Abstract/Summary
Over the years, newspapers have been used as a venue for criticism and public opinion. These criticisms are sometimes injurious to the persons being defamed that being the national politicians most of the time. There also exist contradictions between the limitations given to the media and the people's right to know. The Freedom of Expression provides the people the authority to write and say whatever they intend to say while the while the limitations of the press is there preserve the integrity of the people Through Libel Law. While it is true that the press in protected by the Constitution, it is also true that public officials are protected by the limitations given to the press.
The people of the Philippines have right to be informed of issues involving public matters such is called the Right to Information. The Right to Information is almost related to the Press Freedom for the former rights give additional grounds for Press Freedom to be given further favor over the protection of issues involving the politicians. This research paper will discuss which rights should be put into consideration. The favor would be either given to the press, in relation to Freedom of Expression, and the people of the Philippines, in relation to their right to Information, or to the politicians, in relation to their right to possibly use the limitations given to the press as grounds to control the media.
This research paper will be a comparison as to which between the right to information and the Press limitations should be given the favor. This research paper will also discuss the negative effects of curtailing the press.
