Abstract/Summary

Abstract. This thesis analyzes all the seven short stories in the compilation Penmanship & Other Stories by Jose Y. Dalisay, Jr., using Lithuanian structuralist A.J. Greima's narrative grammatology. This study offers a structuralist reading of a text by uncovering the desire, search or aim, in the story, its message, the support and hindrance that are involved in the transmission of the message, as well as the structure/s or syntagm/es that can be discerned in the narrative.

The major characteristics of structuralism are that it disregards the author and history and that it yields to a more objective and scientific way of looking at a text.
