Abstract/Summary

Time or recency of death and relationship [parent or child] were known as factors, which differentiate coping styles, outcomes of coping, and acceptance of loss of a parent or child in recent or long time deaths. This study aims to find out the validity of such factors. Four females who experienced the sudden death of their parent or child recently or a long time ago were the subjects of this study. Subjects were interviewed by the researcher through the use of a self-constructed interview guide. Case records were constructed for each subject which contain the following: their personality profile, the events surrounding their parent or child's death, their coping styles, the positive outcome of their coping, the negative outcome of their coping, their acceptance of the loss of their loved one, their personality trait, their perceived life stress, and received social support. Qualitative content analysis was formed on the data gathered. Coping styles such as 'seeking social resources' coping, 'problem-focused' coping, 'planning and hoping 'coping, and 'cognitive suppression were mostly exhibited by the subjects. The outcomes of their coping varied. But generally, they have showed more positive outcomes of coping. Individuals whose parent died showed more ability in accepting the loss of their loved one in contrast to those individuals who experienced the death of their child. Trends, similarities, and differences in the data gathered were also discussed.
