Abstract/Summary

This study is focused on the detention programs of Manila Youth Reception Center which is a detention center for the youth offenders. This study aims to describe the factors accounting for juvenile delinquency, to describe the crimes and offenses commited by the juvenile offenders, to assess current detention programs and services in terms of their relevance and long-term effects based on the perception of the program planners, youth offenders and researchers. Lastly, the study aims to provide inputs to relevant programs for the rehabilitation and detention of the youth offenders. The programs assessed in this study were the Special Education (Sped) program, Homelife Services and Social Services. Descriptive analysis was undertaken through key-informants interview, supplemented by observations. The respondents consisted of 30 youth offenders whose stay in MYRC is six months or more, the program planners namely the OIC, 2 social workers, 2 teachers and 2 houseparents. The researchers utilized 2 interview guides, one for each set of respondents. The programs in the center were found to benefit the offenders but they need a lot of improvement.
