Abstract/Summary

This study aims to describe the traffic rules compliance of pedestrians and drivers passing along the De La Salle University-Taft and Estrada Intersection. It aims to describe the following according to the interactionist perspective (1) the cultural norms affecting the behavior of the individuals (2) other factors such as pedestrians, drivers and traffic enforcers who influence the behavior of the individual and (3) the resulting behavior from the interaction of the individual with the norms and other factors. Data were gathered following a descriptive design using interviews and observation guides. Ten (10) respondents from the interview represent the pedestrians, ten (10) for car drivers and two (2) for traffic enforcers. Results of the study showed their traffic habits and views, and the emerging norm present from the interaction such as acceptance of jaywalking, beating the red light and going ahead even if there is a red light but no cars or police around. In addition, findings also showed that majority knew the traffic laws. Contradictions between the ideal or cultural norm and the actual behavior of the people in the situation are also shown in the discussion of the results. Lack of law enforcement allows the pedestrians to violate the law. There are no punishment to impose on violators to deter the individual from committing deviate from the traffic law. (Findings presented are explained and justified in Chapter 4).
