Abstract/Summary

This study is a psychoanalytic reading of Anthony Burgess' Enderby Outside in the light of Sigmund Freud's theories on character formation. id-Psychology, Models of the Psyche, Repression, Oedipus Complex and Dream Interpretation are five ideas of Freud's which will be delved into in uncovering the development of the main character. Enderby. Primary focus will be on the character of Enderby. The basic premise of these five ideas is that in understanding the character and how he thinks, it will add depth to the novel and lead us to a richer appreciation of the text.
