Abstract/Summary

In the company CLP Precision Metal Toolings Inc., a significant percentage of their operations deal with the manual polishing of stainless steel rods. Finding a way to improve and speed up the process, lead to the completion of this project. This thesis project is a comprehensive application of theories of the different disciplines in mechatronics, namely mechanical, electrical and software design, all of which were utilized to fabricate a prototype for this purpose. The objective of this research paper is to detail the different mechanisms and theories that were used in the fabrication of the machine.

The group constructed a machine which has two basic operations, sanding and buffing. Each can be used either individually or simultaneously. The sanding operation takes away the irregularities in the finish of the rods while the buffing operation gives the rods the mirror finish. The rods are manually loaded and unloaded before and after the operation. The rods traverse through the machine much like cylindrical objects go through a center-less grinder. The finished product of the machine should be stainless steel rods of defined lengths and diameters that would have a (no. 8) mirror finish.

Based on the results of the experiments, the group concluded that the machine does provide the stainless steel rods with mirror finish, as well as making the process faster than the manual method.
