Abstract/Summary

Autonomous helicopters and relevant applications have been prevalent subjects for research in the past few years. Helicopters are inherently unstable aircraft. The complexity of which is only exceeded by their usefulness. Many countries around the world have been quick at porting multitudes of applications to autonomous helicopters. However, in the Philippines, steady development of such a platform has not been initiated.

This paper presents a foundation study and implementation of an autonomous helicopter and its mechanical, electronic and software design. It illustrates the viability of such a system and its possible practical applications. The study has developed the basic framework and platform to start autonomous helicopter research. Moreover, the study presents an alternative control system for autonomous helicopter flight.

With all systems integrated, autonomous flight is successfully demonstrated. All together, the system described in this paper is expected to give rise to a new breed of robotics in the country.
