Abstract/Summary
Congracilaria babae, a parasitic red alga on Gracilaria salicornia is studied for the first time based on materials collected from the PhilippinesVegetative and female reproductive structures in C. babae are compared with those in the host plant and found to be closely similar. Its adelphoparasitic nature is confirmed while its taxonomic placement within the Gracilariaceae is supported. The generic recognition of Congracilaria is reaffirmed by the combination of characters in Philippine materials. Compared to other adelphoparasitic red algae, Congracilaria is distinct in being bisporangiate and having no rhizoidal connection between parasite and host.
