Abstract/Summary
Through the years, franchising evolved to be a tool for businesses to expand and grow. This business strategy entails a company to be fully ready for this new challenge for its success. If the company is not fully prepared to take on this strategy, it will be difficult for them to use this to expand. This thesis determined whether or not Giligan’s Island Bar and Restaurant is prepared for business-format franchising. The restaurant has been part of the industry for the past 15 years and they continue to expand as of today. This study further assessed Giligan’s Island Bar and Restaurant if they have the corresponding factors under product, finance, and franchisor attributes based on the operational framework created by Jao, Sibal, So and Yujuico in 2006. The researchers gathered data through survey and by through an interview with the owner of the restaurant, Mr. Alquiros. A checklist from Khera was utilized to determine the factors that the restaurant currently have and does not have. The first factor, product, tackles the protectable trademark, brand awareness, marketable product and advertising and sales-promotion ability of the company. The second factor, finance, illustrates the growth and profitability and the capital sufficiency of the company to support franchising. The last factor, franchisor attributes, discusses the following: legal involvement, track record, innovativeness and the operating system of the company.
Based on the results of our interview, survey and statistics, the proponents can safely deduce that Giligan’s Island Bar and Restaurant is partially ready for business format franchising as they satisfied if not all, but most of the factors that fell under product, finance and franchisors attributes. However, as the restaurant did not fully satisfy all of the factors, this only indicates that significant improvements in areas that weren’t satisfied are still needed. The company needs to primarily focus on the number of sales they generate in order to have the resources to expand. In addition, they must improve the taste and presentation of their dishes so customers will make repeat purchases. Yes, the restaurant is ready solely based on the number of factors satisfied, but they are not fully prepared for franchising. They need to satisfy all the factors based on the checklist before they can be fully prepared to expand through business-format franchising.
