Abstract/Summary
The peel extracts of ten different fruits commonly found in the Philippines were screened for their antimicrobial activities. The fruits included the following: Avocado (Persea americana Mill.), Banana (Musa sapientum Linn.), Dragon fruit (Hylocereus undatus Haw.), Honeydew melon (Cucumis melo Linn.), Mango (Mangifera indica L.), Orange (Citrus sinensis L.), Papaya (Carica papaya L.), Pineapple (Ananas comosus L.), Pomelo (Citrus maxima Merr.), and Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus Thunb.). All the fruits were purchased from leading supermarkets in Metro Manila. The peel extracts were obtained using the solvent extraction method with acetone, ethanol, hexane, and sterile distilled water as extracting solvents. These were screened for antimicrobial activities using the disc-agar diffusion method on gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella typhi, and a gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus. The results of the study showed that the fruit peel extracts exhibited inhibitory zones on at least one of the microorganisms. Mango and Orange peel extracts demonstrated zones of inhibition on the growth of all four microorganisms. On the other hand, the growth of three of the four microorganisms was shown to be inhibited by the Dragon fruit, Honey dew, Pineapple, and Watermelon peel extracts. The rest of the fruit peel extracts exhibited inhibitory zones on only one of the microorganisms. Moreover, among the solvents used, the ethanolic extracts exhibited the most number of inhibitory zones while the distilled water extracts were shown to produce the least. The results of the present study further demonstrated the presence of antimicrobial compounds in the peels of different fruits.
