Abstract/Summary

A taxonomic survey of marine gastropod shells from Bisa Beach, in Orense, Bauan, Batangas was conducted three times during the months of August and September 1993. Twenty-six (26) species of marine gastropod shells were collected and classified. These were: Turbo chrysostomus Linne (1758). Conus Mustelinus Hwass. Chicoreus microphyllus Lamarck (1816). Conus stercusmuscarum Linnaeus, Cypraea lynx Linnaeus, Conus striatus Linnaeus (1758). Pleuroploca trapezium Linnaeus (1758). Cantharus fumosus Dillwyn (1816-17). Oliva bulbiformis Dulcos (1835). Conus flavidus Lamarck, Vasum turbinellum Linnaeus. Cypraea annulus Linnaeus, Trochus maculatus. Rhinoclavis sinensis Gmelin (1791). Mitra ferruginea Lamarck, Conus pulicarius Hwass (1972), Conus glans Hwass, Conus marmoreus Linnaeus, Harpa articularis Lamarck (1822). Thais mancinella Linne (1758). Distorsio anus Linnaeus. Cerithium nodulosum Bruguiera, Nerita albicilla Linnaeus, Lambis chiragra Linnaeus, Strombus mutabilis Linnaeus (1821), Cymatium pyrum Linne (1758). They were found to belong to subclass Prosobranchia: order Archaegastropoda, Neogastropoda and Megagastropoda: superfamily Muricoida, Conacea, Volutacea, Mitracea, Muricacea, Buccinacea, Cypraeacea, Strombacea, Cymatiacea, Cerithiacea, Trochacea: family Trochidae, Turbinidae, Fasciolariidae, conidae, Olvidae, Turbinellidae, Harpidae, Mitridae, Muricidae, Buccinidae, Cypraeidae, Strombidae, Cymatiidae, Cerithiidae and seventeen genera. The collection site covered the mosolittoral and supralittoral zones of about 60 meters of the shoreline and around 12 to 18 meters was utilized from the shoreline towards the land. Some areas in the beach were found to be rocky others were sandy with either fine or coarse sand.
