Abstract/Summary

This thesis was undertaken on the supposition that it was essential for civil engineering students and professionals to take advantage of the advances brought about by the widespread use of computers. Computers are not prone to computational errors, and using such minimizes the time spent for calculations.

To better utilize computers for civil engineering purposes, the proper software programs should be applied. However, a survey of the available engineering software programs in the market today reveals that most of them are not user-friendly, and the majority of them are available at prohibitive costs.

With this in mind, the proponents pursued the development of three computer software programs which can be used for reinforced concrete analysis and design of structural footings. The proponents envisioned Windows-based software programs that feature easy inputting and accurate output focusing on isolated spread square and rectangular footing and rectangular combined footing supporting two columns.

The programs were developed using Visual Basic Enterprise 5.0 to design isolated spread footings and combined footings given the loading and the dimensions. These programs incorporated the pertinent provisions of the National Structural Code of the Philippines (N.S.C.P.) volume 1, 4th edition, as well as relevant provisions of ACT-95. As aforesaid, the programs are WIndows-based, user-friendly and feature easy inputting and editing of data. Inputted data can be saved and retrieved in a file. Hard copy of the results can also be printed. A screen output with minimum design details was produced. A default set of values for material strength, and bar sizes can be used and modified to avoid repetitive inputting. Moreover, each program needs only 3 MB of hard disk space.

The computer software programs come with an easy-to-read user's manual which includes flowcharts for design.
