Abstract/Summary

This study entitled A PC-based eye position tracker guided high quadriplegic wheelchair using image processing with obstacle detection system will be of help to quadriplegic people to move around. A camera is used to capture the different positions of the eye. From the captured image of the eye, where different positions of the eye corresponds to a certain direction, will result the desired turn or movement. Each captured image will be processed with the help of the Visual Basic software. It does not end there. The obstacle detection system comprising of four ultrasonic for detecting large obstructions and an infrared sensor used to detect some irregularities, such as bumps or depressions, on the floor level will automatically put a stop to the chair once it has detected any obstacle.

These are not just the features of the system. The wheelchair also features a manual brake to control the manual navigation and switch based navigation. In addition, the manual and eye position control mechanisms are complimented by a voice recognition program that will allow the system to respond to voice instruction as well.
