Abstract/Summary

This is an exploratory study on the concept of pakitang tao. The purpose of this study is to develop the concept of pakitang tao, to identify the motives in pakitang tao, and to identify the situations where pakitang tao usually takes place. The data in this study were gathered though interview and FGD. Purposive and referral sampling were used to determine the respondents for both FGD and interview. The participants were 7 key informants for the interview and 3 groups of 8 of common Filipino groups for the FGD. After the data was analyzed. The researchers concluded 7 conceptualizations about pakitang tao. These are: (1) It is an act of putting on a show for others to see. (2) It is done to achieve a certain goal, or because of a certain motive. (3) It is a skill learned and developed through culture and society. It is not a behavior. (4) It generally has a negative connotation in our society. It is often associated with concepts or terms such as dishonesty, deception and plastik (5) It may be seen as both positive and negative as with regards to its use. (6) In pakitang tao, there must always be a motive. (7) There are certain situations where in pakitang tao is needed.
