Abstract/Summary

Citrus mitis B. (calamansi), Cucumis sativus, L. (cucumber), Lycopersicon lycopersicum K. (tomato), and Capsicum annuum L. (siling-haba) extracts were used in an attempt to find out if they can be used as a substitute for high cost drugs used against Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella sp., and Salmonella typhi. The Disc method was used to test the anti-bacterial substance in the extracts. Zones of inhibition were indicated by a clear ring around the filter paper disk which was wet with the different extracts. All extracts especially calamansi proved to be effective against the test organisms and had the greatest zone of inhibition against Klebsiella pneumoniae of 41.3 mm. and 35.3 mm. against Salmonella typhi. Cucumber extract on the otherhand did not produce any inhibition against Klebsiella pneumoniae and Shigella sp. Siling-haba extract was successful in inhibiting the growth of the test organisms but did not produce as much inhibition compared to the other fruit extracts.
