Abstract/Summary

In this present study, the researchers tested how optimism works in the relationship between one spiritual meaning-making and one subjective well-being. Spiritual meaning-making refers to the process of perceiving ones life events of ones spiritual beliefs, relationship with a divine being. More specifically, this study will discuss two different paths in mediating processes of optimism: first, optimism as mediator between relationship of positive spiritual meaning-making and subjective well-being second, optimism as mediator between relationship of negative spiritual meaning-making and subjective well-being. Mediational analysis was tested using a purposive sampling of 306 undergraduate students from a private university in Manila. Results demonstrate that optimism mediates the positive relationship between positive spiritual meaning-making and subjective well-being while optimism mediates the negative relationship between negative spiritual meaning-making and subjective well-being. Thus, spiritual meaning-making is connected to increase subjective well-being through increased in optimism. Hence, a person is positively understand his or her life circumstances in a positive lens due to a kind and loving God, he or she may have high positive point of view of his or her life circumstances which lead to have high positive cognitive evaluation of his or her life. On the other hand, a person is negatively understand his or her life circumstances in a negative point of view due to vengeful and punishing God, he or she may have low positive point of view of his or her life circumstances which lead to have low cognitive evaluation of his or her life. Discussed in this study are implication of this research on the relevance of spiritual meaning-making, optimism as mediators in the relationship between spiritual meaning-making and subjective well-being are discussed as well as their relevance in the field of psychology.
