Abstract/Summary

Trafficking in human beings has rapidly increased in recent years. This has caught much of the attention of states and regional bodies, such as the EU and the ASEAN, making it a priority in their agendas. Both the EU and the ASEAN have adopted measures and developed instruments to combat and prevent this mounting phenomenon. This thesis focused on answering the general question: How does the EU and the ASEAN respond to human trafficking? To provide comparison between the EU's and the ASEAN's responses to human trafficking, three components of the securitization theory were examined. These components are the securitizing actors, the securitizing moves and the legislative moves. This study is divided into two main parts. First part focused on the comparison in securitizing actors and moves. Securitizing moves included work plans, memoranda, projects and programs. Securitizing actors pertained to those who bodies that are responsible for executing such moves. On the other hand, the second part discussed how the responses by the EU and ASEAN were legitimized. Legitimizing moves referred to laws, treaties, declaration and other legal frameworks that were adopted to legitimize the two bodies responses against human trafficking. Finally, the researchers conclude that the EU securitized human trafficking more effectively than the ASEAN.
