Abstract/Summary
This study aims to describe the lesbian mother as a parent. Seven lesbian mothers, their children and their significant others, who help her in child rearing, were interviewed. Chain-referral was used to gather the participants. The data collected from them were transcribed and cases were constructed for each participant. Case analysis was performed on the data gathered. Their statements were categorized according to their experiences on the roles she plays as a parent, her parenting style and the communication pattern between her and her children. Results showed that most of the lesbian mothers in this study assume both mother and father roles for the development of their children. They assume the emotional and intimate functions, nurturant function, bread winner function and teach morals and values to their children. Lesbian mothers are authoritative and they shift their parenting style due to the child's developmental stage. They used to spank their children but when their children reached the age of 8 to 10, they stopped spanking and resorted to talking. They saw the age as a sign of increased responsibility from the child. Some lesbian mother's communication pattern is open because they can often talk about anything and they choose no time to discuss it. But this does not mean that they have an open communication line. Because there are still unsafe topics, like the mother's lesbianism and the children's father, that they do not talk about.
