Abstract/Summary
The study aimed to describe and compare the concept and process of paglalamay as experienced by Catholic Filipinos and Catholic Filipino-Chinese families who are living in Manila. The study is qualitative in nature and used a descriptive-comparative research design. Ten Catholic Filipinos and ten Catholic Filipino-Chinese who have undergone paglalamay within the past two years were purposively sampled. Also, two grief counselors expert in the Filipino and Filipino-Chinese paglalamay were interviewed. In-depth interview was utilized to obtain the data needed in the research. Content analysis was then used to analyze and compare the gathered data. Based on the study, the researchers found out that there are indeed similarities and differences between Catholic Filipinos and Catholic Filipino-Chinese paglalamay and these were classified and compared into the following categories: duration, candles, attire, offerings, gambling, donations, and banners. It was found that Catholic Filipino-Chinese have more beliefs and practices being observed and that they are stricter when it comes to following these customs and traditions as compared to Catholic Filipinos. Consequently, these practices and beliefs have an effect on the grief process of the bereaved.
