Abstract/Executive Summary

In times of elections, political candidates utilize performative political strategies to establish character experience and build relationships with society. While these tactics are prevalent, there is limited empirical evidence regarding their specific impact on the perspectives of generational voters of local communities. To address this gap, this qualitative study explores the presence and impact of performative strategies on voters across Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z in Sitio Makabuhay during the 2025 Philippine elections. This study uses purposive sampling to select registered voters from three distinct generations. Data collection involved a triangulation approach consisting of in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. Thematic analysis was utilized to identify patterns and themes within the participants' responses. The findings reveal nine (9) themes aligned to answer the study’s research questions. First, the results imply that voters perceive political engagement as election-driven, characterized by seasonal kindness and repetitive, unfulfilled promises, and focus solely on winning to fulfill self-interest rather than genuine public service beyond elections. Second, specific performative strategies employed by candidates revolve around rhetorical techniques, symbolic gestures, and media campaigns. Lastly, constant exposure to these performative tactics led to skepticism and a significant loss of voter trust, highlighting the generational shift to action-based voting towards political change and effective leadership.
