Abstract/Executive Summary

This research examines the factors that influence MC-SHS students’ involvement in student-led initiatives. It also aims to analyze the effects of their experiences on their involvement, and provides recommendations to further enhance student participation in these initiatives. To achieve this, the study employed a qualitative research approach, thematically analyzing and coding data from semi-structured interviews conducted with 16 students across different student demographics. Results show that not all students are provided avenues to explore all stages in project implementation, with conceptualization and spearheading mostly being limited to high entry-level positions. Disparities manifest in the access to student involvement opportunities. Furthermore, despite numerous motivating factors to participation, students can be limited by both internal and external inhibiting factors. Suggestions to promote involvement centered on the need for teacher support and amplification, equitable access to opportunities, and effective promotional strategies, primarily targeting homeroom teachers’ efforts in boosting engagement, nurturing personal relationships with students, and aiding students’ realization of their potential and skills. Ultimately, involvement in student-led initiatives showed positive effects on students’ peer relationships and self-perceptions, whether internally or externally motivated.
