Abstract/Executive Summary

While color psychology is known to influence cognitive responses, current literature lacks a synthesized, evidence-based understanding of how color and UI best support instructional design (ID) in digital learning environments. This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) aims to address the existing gap in the literature regarding the use of user interface (UI), specifically the application of color schemes within Learning Management Systems (LMS). This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework to systematically identify and analyze literature published between 2020 and 2025. Using a qualitative and thematic approach, the study synthesized 26 articles to identify evidence-based design practices and color rules. The analysis revealed that strategic color application, such as using high-contrast backgrounds, color-coded navigation, and harmonious palettes, significantly reduces cognitive load and emotional fatigue while enhancing learner engagement and retention. These findings lead to a synthesis of design principles intended to guide instructional designers in creating cohesive and accessible LMS environments.
