Abstract/Executive Summary

The research study focused on comparing the perceptions of middle class senior high school students on the food expenditure recommended by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) suggesting that ₱21.33 food expenditure of a Filipino is not considered as food poor. The research also tackled the food satisfaction and accessibility of the upper-middle (UMC) and lower-middle (LMC) classes who are senior high school students, and the differences among the two socio-economic classes. This research is a causal-comparative research design as it compares two groups of middle-class students. To classify the respondents, the researchers conducted a pre-survey based on the socio-economic classification by PIDS. The middle-class students were then divided into two groups, UMC and LMC senior high school students. Afterwards, the sample size was determined through power analysis, there were 220 students who participated in the study, 110 per socio-economic class. The researchers made use of simple random sampling for the randomization of the respondents per socio-economic class. Moreover, results showed that there was no statistically significant difference in the perceptions for both food accessibility and satisfaction on the recommended food expenditure by NEDA, by the UMC and LMC in the Mann-Whitney U Test conducted; however, some key findings show a difference among their perception on the said food expenditure. NEDA shall reevaluate or adjust the current food expenditure. Future researchers may consider wider socio-economic classes as their respondents and may conduct the same study in a qualitative nature.
